In my classes, sometimes we talk about some interesting Japanese-English words that seem similar, but actually have very different meanings.

While most loanwords are similar enough that all you have to do is focus on stress/ pronunciation (like "silhouette" vs "シルエット" which do have the same meaning), sometimes there are important differences to note.

One such word that could come up in both casual and friendly, or even office situations, is what stationary stores call a "ダイアリー." Many of my friends and coworkers use a calendar notebook to keep track of important dates and deadlines, myself included.

However, in English, a diary is a secret notebook that you use to write down private thoughts and experiences, and you would never take it out of your home.

One time, a former coworker told me she needed to go and grab her diary before a meeting, and I was actually very shocked - why did she want to write down her secrets in the office?! I didn't want to actually see what she was thinking! So, in English, it's best to call that kind of schedule book a "planner" or even a "journal."

So, while it may seem easy enough, always double-check Japanese English word meanings!

でも実際は英語と日本語で少し意味の違う単語もたくさんあります！

Anna先生が特に言っていたのが「ダイアリー」について。

ダイアリーとは、外国人の方からすると秘密のことを書くノートという意味になるそうです。

私たちはよく手帳に仕事の打ち合わせや予定、大事なことをメモしたりしますよね。

そこで、I need my diary at the meething today.

と言ってしまうと...え！！！なんで秘密のことを職場で書くのか！

とびっくりされてしまうんです。

そういう時は、plannerかjournalと使うのが正しいようです！

まだまだ日本語と英語で違う意味の単語がたくさんあります！
