イギリスのHalloween事情について

聞いてみました！

国が違うと、Halloweenなどの行事も

少し違うみたいですね！いろいろな発見が

あって面白いので、行事ごとがあった際は

In today's blog I'd like to introduce a kind of
festival that we have in my country,the UK.
In the UK we don't really have any summer festivals
or fireworks. However, we have an event in autumn which
involves fireworks and bonfires.
It's called 'bonfire night,
or 'Guy Fawkes night'.

The origins of this event are very dark.
In 1605 a man named Guy Fawkes attempted
to destroy the Parliament building
(the building where Big Ben is) by making
an explosion in the basement.
He was arrested just before his attempt.
As a punishment he was executed by setting
him on fire.
This is a very gruesome story,
but since this time British people
have had a kind of celebration on the
day he was arrested - the 5th of November.
People make a big bonfire.
This is a controlled fire made with a
bunch of wood. A doll representing
Guy Fawkes is thrown onto the fire.

Nowadays people gather to watch fireworks
and see the bonfire. People are more
sensitive about the dark history of
this event so it's often just called
'Firework night'now, and people
don't throw the doll onto the fire.
