Dear readers,
Today I'd like to talk about some interesting words. These words are called "auto-antonyms," or "antagonyms," and have multiple meanings, of which one is the reverse of another. For example, the verb "dust" can mean to remove dust or to add dust:
I vacuumed the house after I finished dusting.
The recipe's final step is to dust the cake with powdered sugar.
Similarly, "cut" can mean to get in (a line or queue) or to get out (of a school class):
It's considered rude to cut in line.
If you continue to cut class you won't be able to graduate.
"License" can mean something indicating permission (driver's license) or to have unbounded freedom to do what one wishes (poetic license). "Last" can indicate something that is just ending or is enduring: (Harry's last drink should last him the whole night). "Hysterical" can refer to something being funny or someone being overwhelmed with fear: (When the turkey burst into flames, it was hysterical how you got hysterical).
Isn't English interesting? Lots of words fall under this category, like impregnable, custom, garnish, handicap, contingent, reservation, table, anxious, sick, critical, and a lot more! What's your favorite auto-antonym?
Thanks for reading! Next time, I'll introduce you to another channel on YouTube Corner. Look forward to it!
License、Last、Hysterical
