Sarah's blog-Radio Experience

イーオン日立校ブログです!

Sarah先生、最近ラジオに出演したそうです!その時のことを書いてくれました◎どうぞお楽しみください♪

Dear readers,

Happy November! Thank you to everyone who came to our Halloween party last week - I had a great time, so I hope you did too!

Today I'm going to talk about an experience I had recently. Have you ever been on the radio before? Well, I got the chance to be on the radio this week! Let me tell you the story.

I listen to the radio a lot. I love the news, and various other radio programs. I always listen to either Al Jazeera or the BBC World service. As someone who's into medicine and health, I usually listen to a BBC program each Monday morning about the latest medical research and advances in medicine. At the end, the host always asks the listeners to message her if they have an idea for the show, and a few weeks ago, I decided to send in my own idea!

I tweeted the show's host alerting her to a newly codified syndrome I had discovered through online research a few months earlier. The syndrome is called R-CPD, and it means that your burp reflex doesn't work, so you can't burp after a meal like many people do! This might seem like a good thing because burping isn't very polite. However, it causes some bad side effects like severe bloating, chest pain, and strange gurgling sounds in the throat. I found a new research paper on this condition after investigating on my own behalf, because I have R-CPD myself! (Don't worry though - it's not that serious!)

Although this health condition now has a name (R-CPD) and can be recognised as a syndrome, nobody knows about it and the research is really new. Nevertheless, it's actually quite common - I discovered that my dad has it as well as one of my friends! I was surprised that so many people have it yet nobody seems to know what it is or why it happens.

When the BBC program team read my tweet and heard about the new research, they said it was fascinating and that they wanted to feature it on the show. Later that week, a friendly producer called me on whatsapp and I explained my experience and research to her in more detail. After we had decided which points we should talk about on the radio, I was instructed to make a voice recording of my answers to various questions and send it to the producer in an email.

It's now confirmed that my explanation of this health condition will air on the BBC World Service in the next week or so, but as I'm writing my blog the date and time have not been confirmed, as they're still searching for a medical expert to go on the show and give advice. When it does air, I'll be happy to hear myself speaking on the radio for the first time, even though the topic isn't that important or exciting! I love the BBC and this health program so I'm pleased that they chose to put me on the airwaves.

I hope that the medical expert on the show can give some good advice, and that talking about R-CPD on the BBC World Service will help raise awareness about it so that doctors can diagnose and treat it well.

Since the idea I proposed to the radio host on twitter was accepted, I'll definitely try proposing ideas for other shows in the future! You should too, if you have an idea you want to share or an issue you want to discuss.

I hope you enjoyed hearing about my radio adventure. You can ask me more about it any time you like!

Have a great week and take care in the cold weather.

All the best,

Sarah
