Hi everyone! This is Sarah. I hope you're having a good week.
Today I want to talk about Japanese customs!
From when I first came to Japan as a student until now, I've learned
a lot about Japanese culture and customs. There are so many unique
things that I love and admire about this country. Some of them are big
things, and some are small things. Today I'll introduce some of the best
points about Japanese culture (in my opinion)!
-
Onsen in the mountains
The UK doesn't have big mountains or hot springs (onsen). But I
love the Japanese mountains! They look so majestic, and it's so peaceful
to take an outdoor bath in a mountain landscape. It really calms my soul.
I've been to Kusatsu, Hakone and Izu before, and I'd like to visit more
hot spring towns in the future.
-
Eating fish and rice for breakfast
In the UK, we eat cereal, porridge or toast for breakfast. Japanese cooked
breakfast is so different! At first, I thought it was strange to eat fish and
vegetables in the morning, but now I love it! It's warm, healthy and delicious
and it gives me a lot of energy for the day. Now I always eat rice in the morning.
-
Using a sun umbrella
It might seem like a small cultural point, but I love that I can use a sun
umbrella (or 'parasol') in Japan. In the UK, people love the sun and like to
tan. Nobody uses a parasol for this reason. If I used one, people would
think I was strange. But my skin turns red so easily! It's really convenient to
use a sun umbrella here. I don't have to always wear suncream.
-
Admiring the flowers
In Japan, people of all ages like to admire flowers. There are plum blossoms in
early spring, then cherry blossoms, hydrangeas (ajisai), sunflowers... The list
goes on! There are festivals and events based on viewing flowers which are really
fun. I've never experienced that outside Japan. Of course, admiring the flowers
is also a great chance to have a picnic with friends.
There are more things I could talk about! But these are four which came to mind.
What's your favourite thing about a foreign culture? Let me know sometime!
Have a great week,
Best wishes,
Sarah
