Hello everyone! It's Jessica.
Did you have a good Christmas?
Today is Boxing Day in the commonwealth so I want to write a little about the holiday.
Last year, I told you that I usually go shopping with my sisters on Boxing Day because there are so many great sales. Many other Australians watch the Boxing Day Cricket match.
I am not a huge fan of Cricket. I like playing Cricket at the beach in summer but I find it boring to watch on TV. My favourite sport to watch is AFL or Australian-rules Footy. So seeing as today is Boxing Day, I thought I'd tell you about footy.
Footy is Australia's national sport. It is very different from American Football and is more like a combination of many different sports. We use a ball that is similar to a rugby ball and run around on a field but there are four goal posts. If you kick the ball through the middle two goal posts, you get a goal (6 points). If the ball goes through the outer two posts, it's a point.
However, just like in basketball, if you are running with the ball, you have to bounce it. (It's not easy to bounce a rugby ball!) You can either kick the ball or handball it forwards or backwards and there is no goal keeper. If you mark the ball (catch the ball after it was kicked, not handballed) you get a free kick too.
I really like Footy because there are many aspects to it and it is almost never boring. The points are often in the hundreds too. I hope you will watch a game if you get the chance!
Now that I'm in Japan, I miss watching Footy. I like rugby too but it wasn't very popular until this year so it was difficult to watch the games. I'd like to find some sports I can watch easily in Japan. Which sport do you enjoy watching? Please let me know at AEON.
