What's in a Name? Part 2
Hello everyone, it's Jessica again with part two of What's in a Name. Today, I'm going to talk about stress and pronunciation and how they can change a name.
Let's first look at how the pronunciation changes whether it's a Male or Female name.
Male //////////////////////// Female
Colin [ko-lin] /////////// Colleen [ko-leen]
Michael [mai-kel]* ////// Michelle [mi-shel]*
Louis [lu-ee OR lu-is] //// Louise [lu-eez]
*Michael and Michelle can both be spelt 'Michel' so you have to be careful.
Many names also have multiple pronunciations.
'Stephen' can be [stef-en] or [stee-van].
'Leah' can be [lee-a] or [lei-a].
In this case, it is best to ask the person how to pronounce their name.
Many names are common in English but also in many other languages. The pronunciation or stress changes depending on the language so make sure to say it the English way when talking in English.
Adam: /// English stress is [A-dam]///Arabic [a-DAM]
David:/// English [dei-vid]////////// French[da-veed]
Naomi:// English [nei-oh-mee] ////// Japanese[na-o-mi]
Can you think of any other names that have different pronunciations in English and Japanese? I'd love to hear about them at AEON!
