To buzz or not to buzz...
How is your Monday going today? Right now, I’m getting an earful of all the cicadas that are abuzz near my apartment. Every summer, the sound of them pierces everything in the area and drowns out all other sounds. I talked to some of my friends and the results seem to be mixed on whether or not the sound is soothing or grating. I definitely lean towards the grating side with a couple of my friends. But the others find it soothing and say it’s a sign that summer is truly in high gear.
What about you? What do you think of the sound of cicadas?
getting an earful = たくさんすぎる音を聞く This means you’re hearing too much. It can be sounds or people talking. It’s usually negative.
abuzz = セミの鳴き声(ex:ミーン、ミンミン) This word isn’t only for cicadas and has multiple meanings.
drowns out = 遮る
soothing = 癒し
grating = 耳障り
in high gear = 夏盛り / ・盛り
