Kentucky Summers
Hello everyone! Laurel here today. Let's talk about summer in my hometown. As you probably know, I'm from Kentucky. Normally summers there, especially in Southern Kentucky (which is where my hometown is), are very hot and very dry. Even at night, the temperatures are often 31 degrees C or more! Air conditioning is very important, and many homes also have ceiling fans. (My house has a ceiling fan in both bedrooms and in the living room. My friend's house is the same!)
Bugs also get very bad in the summer--flies, wasps, moquitoes. Everywhere you go, you can hear cicadas, especially on very hot days. On those really hot days, you can see the heat! It's easy to burn yourself on asphalt or car door handles, or seatbelt buckles.
It's not all bad, though. Usually, people can cool off at the local pool--there are two open to the public; one is the city pool next to one of our local parks, and the other is inside our local YMCA. They can also go fishing or swimming at our lake, go for nature walks in the parks we have in town and the surrounding county, cave tours or to a park called Kentucky Down Under, where you can feed kangaroos and birds!
You can also enjoy cool treats like Hawaiian shaved ice, or get ice cream from one of the trucks that drives through neighborhoods in my hometown.
I hope you enjoy your summers here! Thank you for reading. I'll see you next time!
