Pets of the Past

Hi everyone, it's Kenn here.

Have you ever had a pet? Maybe you have one now? I'd love to know more about them! I think pets can really improve people's moods and lifestyles in many ways, but that's not exactly what I'm here to talk about today. I'm going to talk about my pets!

The picture shows my two guinea pigs which I took care of with my brother about 5 or 6 years ago. Their names were Chocolate (left) and Vanilla (right). They were born from the same mother, so they were actually brother and sister! My brother and I had both wanted a pet for some time but since we lived in an apartment building, dogs and cats were not allowed. Around that time, my mom had a friend who breeds rodents, which is how she could get two young guinea pigs for us. I was in the last year of elementary school at that time, but I still clearly remember my feeling that night, coming home from a regular day and getting one of the best surprises of my life!

Chocolate was a little shy, but was really friendly if she got to know you and was always hungry - she used to squeal really loudly when she saw somebody walk past the fridge where we kept her vegetables. Vanilla was more active than Chocolate, and he liked to explore new places when we weren't paying attention, like underneath the sofa. Vanilla was very smart too - he learned how to open the door to his cage all by himself! They were my first pets and I don't think I could ever forget the time I had spent with them.

They both lived longer than their average lifespan of 5 years (Vanilla was 6 and Chocolate was 8) so I'm not very upset that they're not with me anymore. If anything, they have actually sparked a bigger passion for me to get more rodents and other small animals as pets in the future! My impression is that guinea pigs are not very popular pets in Japan. Please correct me if I'm wrong though!!! I hope I could motivate someone you know to look after a guinea pig. I'd love to talk more about Chocolate and Vanilla with you sometime, and please tell me about your pets sometime too! A little fact about me is that I am really interested in ALL animals - even the scary, dangerous and ugly ones!

That's all for today, everyone. Thanks a lot for reading and stay tuned!
