Swimming

Did you know that approximately 50% of

Jamaicans　cannot swim?

おおよそ半数のジャマイカ人が泳げないことを

知っていましたか？

Jamaica is an island surrounded by water,

but most people never learn how to swim.

ジャマイカは海に囲まれた島ですが、

ほとんどのジャマイカ人は泳ぎ方を習いません。

There are 2 main reasons for this.

これには主に２つの理由が挙げられます。

1. 95% of schools do not have access to a

swimming pool.

１．95％の学校は、水泳用プールがありません。

Swimming is not a popular sport in Jamaica

and most schools are not required to have

swimming facilities as a part of their Physical

Education program.

ジャマイカでは水泳は人気のあるスポーツ

ではなく、ほとんどの学校では体育のカリキュラム

の一環として水泳施設を設けることを義務付け

られていません。

This is mainly because it's expensive to maintain.

主な理由としては、水泳施設の維持費が高いことが

挙げられます。

So children do not usually learn how to swim

at school.

よって、子どもたちはたいてい泳ぎ方を学校で習いません。

2. Most people are scared to swim in the ocean

because there are lot of sharks, saltwater

crocodiles and jellyfish among other predators

in Jamaican waters.

２．ほとんどの人は海で泳ぐことを怖がります。

なぜなら、たくさんのサメや海水ワニ、クラゲ

などの捕食者がジャマイカの海域にはいるからです。

So we never really venture far into the ocean.

よって、私たちは遠くまで海の中へ入ってはいきません。

どのくらい水泳を続けていますか？

日本と同じ島国ですが

およそ半数のジャマイカの方たちが

泳げないのは驚きですね！
