Hello, everyone!
This is Robert from AEON Yurakucho School.

Today I want to talk about how to improve your English listening skills.

Do you have trouble understanding spoken English because it is too fast or the sentences seem too long?

This is a common problem that many language learners have.

Many people try to understand spoken English by translating a sentence into Japanese in their head. This is fine for simple or short sentences, but becomes very difficult when listening to longer or more complex sentences.

One way to overcome this issue is by doing Sight Translation.

Sight Translation helps you increase your information processing speed by understanding English in the order you hear it rather than translating an entire sentence into Japanese in your head.

Here's how to do it:

1.Using an English sentence, use slash (/) marks to divide the sentence into groups (after verbs, before conjunctions, before prepositions, etc.)

2.Translate the word groups into Japanese. It should look something like this:

I'm going to be / kind of busy / in the next couple of weeks

私はなる 　　　/ 忙しく 　　/　これからの二週間は

By dividing and translating sentences this way, you should find it easier to understand the way English sentences are structured.

If you practice this skill regularly, you should be able to understand English sentences more easily and quickly as you hear them. Please give this a shot and let us know how it goes!
