こんにちは Olie先生です!
Today I learned the Japanese word
コンセント and was very surprised to
learn its meaning.
The English word "consent" means allow
and has nothing to do with power outlets.
It turns out there are quite a few
Katakana words which come from English
but which have very different meanings
from their English counterparts.
For example, サイダー means
the same as "soda" or "pop"
in English、but the English word
"cider" means シードル.
My favorite is the word マンション.
When I came to Japan, I thought
most people live in huge houses with
enormous gardens and swimming pools.
It turns out that the word
マンション means "apartment" in English.
