Dear readers,

Today I'd like to talk about my favorite Japanese foods. In America, the first thing people think of when they hear "Japanese food" is sushi. Of course I like sushi as well, but it's not my favorite. That title goes to a little noodle dish called ramen. Like most Americans, the first ramen I tried was one of the many varieties of instant noodles you can find at the grocery store. I thought it tasted pretty good considering how easy it was to make.

When I got older I discovered that actual ramen restaurants existed, and everything changed. One such restaurant in Milwaukee is called Red Light Ramen, which I am convinced is the best ramen in Wisconsin. These places try to replicate the experience of dining in Japan, and provide chopsticks and a spoon by default. I was asked if eating ramen the traditional way was difficult, but luckily I've had a lot of practice!

I always ordered the tonkotsu ramen, which is my favorite kind. Besides ramen, I was a big fan of Japanese style curry, sushi, sashimi, rice, and miso soup. Most people in America don't know much about Japanese food outside of sushi and ramen. Many people also don't make a distinction between sushi and sashimi. In America they tend to focus on making extravagant rolls with lots of sauces added, rather than high quality cuts of fish.

It's no surprise that Japanese food made outside of Japan isn't as good, but there are some communities that come close. One such place is Arlington Heights, Illinois, which has a large Japanese population. They have a Japanese market called Mitsuwa, and lots of delicious restaurants serving Japanese food. Now that I live in Japan, I want to eat lots of delicious Japanese food you can only get here!

Thanks for reading! Next time, I'll talk about my visit to Hitachi Seaside Park! Look forward to it!
