British Royals

Hello!

イーオン日立校ブログです!Sarah先生がイギリスの王室について書いてくれました!どうぞお楽しみください★

Dear readers,

I hope you're having a good week! The weather has been really lovely - perfect for picnics! You should have one while it's still warm enough.

Last Sunday, you may have seen a special visitor to Hitachi. Of course, the new Emperor came to town! It was an interesting day for the city. Shoko-san and I went to see him and Empress Masako on the main road in their car. They were waving happily out the window with big smiles on their faces. It was nice to see! I was able to take a decent picture to show my family in the UK.

Today though, instead of the Japanese royal family, I'd like to talk about the British royals and what they mean to society!

Of course, in the UK we also have a royal family, the members of which are famous worldwide. Queen Elizabeth II has been the queen now for 67 years and is one of the longest reigning monarchs in history. She's an interesting character! The royal family aren't allowed to express any kind of opinion in society, but she often expresses herself through her actions and the clothes she wears. (For example, we could tell that she supported the EU when she attended an event wearing an outfit with all EU colours, and we could tell she didn't like Donald Trump when she wore a broach given to her by Obama at their first meeting.) She doesn't smile a lot and often looks a little grumpy in public, but her face lights up when she sees horses or dogs as she's a great animal lover.

Although the Queen is widely respected, as are the princes William and Harry, actually in general Brits don't get so excited about their royals nowadays. When she was coronated in the 1950's shortly after WWII, there was a lot of national spirit in the air and everyone was excited. Now, in 2019, the queen has aged and the excitement has faded. Last Sunday, I saw so many people lining the street for the Emperor's car, but I've never seen a scene like that in a small town in the UK. Maybe the Queen just doesn't tour much! There are still some royal family enthusiasts in the UK, but I'd say they're fairly rare.

This being said, the British royal family does have a very large number of foreign fans! Usually, when I see the royal family members on TV, the people lining the street seem to be mostly American or Asian tourists. Strangely, even though America fought for independence from Britain a few hundred years ago, so many Americans are fans of the British royals! When Prince Harry and earlier Prince William got married, I saw a lot of Americans on TV crying and saying it was beautiful, and other tourists saying that it was like a fairytale, but I don't think British people got so emotional.

There are also a large number of people in the UK who go so far as to say that the royal family is outdated and should be abolished. I can understand their point to an extent. The royal family costs a lot of British taxpayer money to maintain, and the idea that some people are born special is very archaic and wrong. On the other hand, others say that there's no harm in keeping the tradition, and that the royal family draw in a lot of tourists due to their fame around the world which generates more money.

Personally, I don't really mind either way! I like the royals as people, but I don't think they're special and I feel a bit sorry for their living situation, because they're not allowed to express their thoughts. If the tradition were abolished, I wouldn't be so sad. But I don't think there's any harm in keeping it either. One thing I do love is the Queen's taste in dogs. She breeds Corgis and Dachshunds! They're so cute! I hope they never leave.

Thank you for reading about British royals today! What do you think of the Japanese royal family? Let me know sometime!

Have a fantastic week,

Best wishes,

Sarah
