Many of our students, and the staff as well,

know that I really like eating from fast food restaurants.

I've noticed, however that there are many "Japanese-English" words that are used here,

that do not work when ordering in the US.

I thought I'd show you some of these common misconceptions.

We do not say "set" when we order with french fries and a drink.

The staff will often ask if you want it "as a meal." I've heard some people say "combo,"

but "meal" is definitely the most popular.

Then, you'll often be asked if you want to eat inside the store or take it with you in a bag.

The most common form on this question is, "is that for here, or to go?"

The first one means you will eat inside the restaurant,

and the latter means you will take it with you.

When you give an answer, you can just say those phrases without a full sentence.

I notice a lot of confusion at stores both here in Japan,

but also abroad about these points.

そこでよく和製英語が使われていますが、

アメリカなど海外に行ったら通じません。それについて説明します。

まず、ポテトとドリンクを頼みたい場合「セットで」と言いません。

スタッフはたいてい「meal」を使います。たまに「combo」も使われていますが

「meal」の方がよくつかわれます。

そして注文の後、「店内でお召し上がりですか」と聞かれますね。

よく聞くのは「is that for here, or to go?」です。

「店内で」「お持ち帰りで」という意味です。

答える時はそのまま「for here」か「to go」と言っても通じます！

この「セット」や「meal」の間違いは

日本だけじゃなく海外でもよくあります。
