My Dream Meal

Dear readers,

It’s pretty chilly! Stay warm out there and don’t catch the flu! It’s been going round this season. Actually, I’m lucky enough to have never caught the flu before! I don’t know what it feels like, but I’ve heard it’s rather unpleasant.

I’ve decided to write on the topic of food today. Specifically: my dream meal! Although I’m not really into cooking, I’m a big fan of food in general and I love going out to restaurants and eating something delicious. As it's valentines day, some of you may be going out for meals with your loved ones tonight, too! The dream meal I'll write about today will include all of the dishes that make my taste buds tingle and my heart feel warm.

There are a few things that won’t be on my menu today. The first is meat, for the simple reason that I’m a pescetarian. The second is mushrooms – unfortunately, I’ve never been a fan of this common vegetable. I don’t really like the taste and the texture is too slimy. Finally, there will be no coriander in my dream meal. I don’t hate the taste of coriander, but whenever there’s coriander in a dish the taste is overpowering and I can’t taste the rest of the food.

So without further ado, with those ingredients excluded, let’s begin with my dream starter! Actually, it’s an easy choice. One of my favourite foods in the world is cheesy garlic bread, particularly the kind with a pizza style base. I love garlic, and I love cheese, so this is my ultimate comfort food. Usually this is a big starter though, so I need to share it with a group! Additionally, halloumi should be part of my dream starter. Halloumi is a kind of cheese which doesn’t melt when cooked. It has a rubbery texture and an amazing taste, and is delicious fried or grilled. No garnish is necessary because the cheese by itself is so tasty.

Onto the main course. Personally, I love eating tapas style (where all the dishes are small and I can try various things). So imagine that today’s menu items are each on a small plate. The first important item is ajillo (shrimp in garlic oil). In my opinion, this is the best dish ever invented. I adore garlic oil, and once I’ve eaten all the shrimp I consider it a necessity to mop up the excess oil with bread. The second item is a vegetable! My favourite things are cheese and garlic, but I do also love vegetables. Since I’m trying to eat more iron, I enjoy eating broccoli with a nice garnish (anchovy is a good match, I think!). I also really love courgettes (or ‘zucchinis’ in American English). I’d like them roasted and soft. Finally, the last item for my main meal is Italian – gnocchi! This is a comfort food for me, and I used to make it all the time in the UK. I love gnocchi in a creamy or cheesy sauce.

When it comes to dessert, I face a tough choice. I am a big dessert fan, and I’ve never tried a dessert that I don’t like. As such, my dream dessert is a dessert platter! Six to eight tiny desserts all on one big plate! Included should be lemon meringue pie, apple crumble, cheesecake, churros, carrot cake, and crème brulee. Also, maybe a banana fritter.

Of course, in practice it would be extremely unhealthy to eat all of this cheese, oil and sugar in one meal. That’s why this blog post is aptly titled ‘my DREAM meal’ – it can’t be a reality, at least not on a regular basis. But I love all of the individual foods mentioned, so if I can eat any of them on any occasion I’m really happy!

So, what’s your dream meal like? Let me know sometime! I love talking about food, even though I’m not much of a cook like Jesse sensei.

I hope I haven’t made you too hungry!
All the best until next week, and happy valentines,

Sarah
