First Performance in Japan

今日はSarah先生の日です。

Dear readers,

How are you? It’s getting chilly so wrap up warm and try not to catch a cold! Kotatsu season has finally arrived.

Today I’m going to tell you about my first experience performing with a band in Japan!

In the UK, I performed regularly with different bands in different cities. I sang in concerts at least once a month, and during peak seasons I would do two or three shows a week! But since coming to Japan I haven’t had the chance to perform with a band. It’s been a little difficult to find a group of musicians to sing with because my Japanese isn’t so good and I don’t have a large number of acquaintances here.

However, last weekend I was lucky enough to be able to perform with some friends and acquaintances in a bar in Mito! I was invited by one of the group’s members to be a guest singer, and I embraced the chance because I’d missed singing live for a while.

The band consisted of a bassist, a pianist, a saxophonist and a flautist. The venue in Mito was small and cosy with a casual style, which I enjoy very much because it takes some pressure off singing live. We had a small rehearsal beforehand and the group sounded very nice together – I used to sing with lots of brass so I enjoyed having the saxophone sound!

One of the songs I performed was quite a challenge. I agreed to sing ‘A Cruel Angel’s Thesis’, the opening theme to the anime ‘Evangelion’. I love the song and it’s a lot of fun, but the lyrics were quite difficult, as the Japanese vocabulary used is colourful and unusual and the song is very fast. I had to practice by myself a few times to get the words right!

Nonetheless, the performance went well and thankfully I didn’t make any mistakes. The audience was very enthusiastic and supportive and we got a big applause! Some AEON Hitachi students even turned up to watch and cheer for us, which I’m thankful for! I was very pleased to be on stage performing again. After the show, we were able to drink together for a while until the last train, and I met some new people who were in the audience, some of whom were interested in my hometown of Manchester.

I really hope that I can perform again sometime soon! I’m not sure how many invites I’ll get in the future, but if you know anybody who’s in need of a singer for their band, let me know.

Thank you for reading and have a nice cosy week!

Sarah
