何やら“Camping”がしたいようです!

=============
I want to go camping!

When I was a child, my family went
camping together often during
the summer.  There is a really large lake
in Maine called Moosehead Lake
that is popular for camping.
There were many islands on the lake,
but there was one really small island
that my family always went to.
That island is so small that you can walk
all around it in less than 15 minutes.
Because it was so small, there were never
any other people there, so it was always
just our family.

During the long American summer
vacation, we would often go camping
on that island 4 or 5 times, each year.
Since it was an island, we could even
bring our dogs, and they could run free
around the island.  During the day
we went swimming and fishing in the lake,
or just rode around on the family sailboat.
At night my father cooked dinner
on a campfire, and my mother and brother
and I sang camping songs.
After dinner we always cooked
marshmallows on sticks over the camp fire.
When it got late, we told ghost stories
before going to sleep in the tent.
Those camping trips with my family
are some of my favorite childhood memories.

When I was in high school,
of course I wasn’t interested in
doing anything with my family.
I only wanted to hang out with my friends.
Camping was an important part of that
too, though!  In Maine, there isn’t
very much to do.  No shopping malls
or community centers for teenagers
to hang out at.  Camping was the best
way to escape our parents and have fun.
We didn’t travel to interesting places;
we just carried some equipment out
into the forest.  When we were far
enough away from any houses,
we setup the tents and started a fire.
That was the best way to meet girls,
and be loud and cause trouble,
since nobody could hear us.

I’m interested in going camping
in Japan.  I’m thinking about going
this year after the summer ends
and the weather gets a little cooler.
I’m not sure if there is anything different
about camping in Japan than camping
in America, but I’m looking forward to
finding out.  If you have any great
recommendations for places to go
camping, please let me know!
