Dear readers,
I hope you’re making the most of this season’s warm weather!

I’ve mentioned before that tea is one of my hobbies. Today I’m going to talk about another, slightly more conventional hobby of mine, and one that’s always been a big part of my life!

This is choral singing! Choral singing means singing with a chorus, but actually in English we rarely use the word ‘chorus’. Instead we say ‘choir’. I’ve been singing in choirs since I was about 13 years old. It all started with my school choir, which I really enjoyed. But after a year or so I decided that I wanted to do more choral singing outside of school.

It was at this time that I auditioned for the Halle Choir. The Halle is a well-known award-winning chorus and orchestra in Manchester which regularly performs at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall and at other venues (big and small) around the country. I was quite young, and really nervous for my audition! I doubted that I was good enough. But I was accepted into the choir, and the Halle became a really amazing and important part of my life!

During my time in the Halle Choir, I had some truly amazing experiences. I made some of my best friends in the choir, some of whom I still sometimes perform with. I went to many different countries on tour, and sang in some beautiful venues and magnificent churches and cathedrals in Europe, including St Marc’s Basilica in Venice. I also performed in five BBC Proms concerts at the Royal Albert Hall before the age of 20, which was a truly humbling experience for someone my age. I was on TV a couple of times too! One of my best memories is performing with the Halle and two other choirs in Mahler’s 8th Symphony, which is one of my favourite classical pieces. The music was so epic and emotional that many people in the choir and audience cried, and we got a standing ovation for half an hour afterwards! If you want to try listening to the Halle Choir and orchestra, you can buy the music on iTunes! There are a lot of Halle CDs, and I’m on a few of them.

Since leaving the Halle, I’ve had a lot more exciting choral experiences, including singing in several different choirs at university and joining an a-capella circle at my university in Tokyo! Durham University had a big choral culture, so I had so much fun singing all the time.

Watching the Hitachi Company Chorus perform at Christmas time was also really great for me. In Japan I don’t have many opportunities for choral singing but I love to watch concerts when I can, and the Hitachi Company Chorus really impressed me! The quality was very high and I had a great merry time.

At Christmas this year, I want to sing carols with a choir. Carols are beautiful, choral songs especially for Christmas time. So I’m looking for people to sing with! I’m a mezzo soprano, and can sing Alto or Soprano. To sing a four part Christmas carol, then, I need at least one more female singer, a tenor, and a bass. If you’re interested please tell me! I know there are some good singers here at AEON Hitachi.

Thank you for reading about my hobbies and experiences! I’d love to hear about yours, too. And if you want to sing together, of course, don’t hesitate to ask!

Have a great week!

Sarah
