今日は、サラ先生の休暇報告です♪

Dear readers,

I hope you all had wonderful vacation periods! I'm going to tell you about mine today.

As some of you may already know, I went to Kyoto for golden week! I had actually been to Kyoto before, but this time there was a big difference: my mum came too! It was her first time in Japan and an extremely new experience for her.

We stayed in a very cheap but very lovely basic ryokan near Kiyomizudera. For me it wasn't that exciting, but for my mum tatami mats and futons and sliding doors were a novelty and she really enjoyed the experience of simply being in our room! I was happy to see her so delighted by small things.

We managed to pack a huge amount of activities into our Kyoto schedule! As our ryokan was in a convenient area, we could easily get to Kiyomizudera, Yasaka shrine, Kodai-ji temple and the Gion area. My mum and I loved all the small traditional shops in the area and the many many tasters available inside (we ate so many yatsuhashi tasters and a lot of pickles!). At Kodai-ji in the evenings there was a really lovely light festival in the temple grounds, so we were able to see this too.
Among other places we visited were Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama, Nara, Uji, Kinkakuji and Ryoan-ji, Ginkakuji and the philosophers' path, and Nanzen-ji.

My mum loved it all, but one of my own highlights was Uji. I had never been to Uji before, and as a tea-lover I was really in my element trying the samples and smelling the tealeaves. I also got to visit Byodoin which is on the ten yen coin. It was such a peaceful town.

There were so many shrines and temples that it's hard to choose a favourite. But I have to say that the most impressive was probably Todai-ji and the giant Buddha inside. It's one of the most magnificent buildings I've ever seen, with so much history. And it's incredibly old for a wooden structure!

My feet are still recovering from the trip, as my average amount of steps walked was around 25,000 per day. But it was very refreshing to be able to go to the Kansai region for a while! Next time, I want to visit Kyushu or Shikoku.

Feel free to ask me more about my experiences in person when we meet next! I'd love to hear about how you spent your holidays, too.

Until next time!

Sarah
