Jesse先生はどんなGWを過ごしたのでしょう

Welcome back everybody!

I hope you all had a wonderful Golden Week!  Mine was really fun.  It was the first time my parents have come to Japan, so it was really interesting to watch them experience life here.  It was even more fun to watch them be confused and make mistakes!

Neither of them could learn any Japanese.  I spent a week trying to teach them how to say “Thank you” but they never got it right.  Next time you see me in the lobby at AEON, ask my about their pronunciation of Japanese names and places, especially Roppongi.  It’s funny how they say it!

My mother was very nervous about making mistakes in Japan, and she spent a long time doing research on the internet about Japanese culture.  But, a lot of information on the internet is wrong or just crazy.  She brought a full roll of toilet paper in her purse, because she read that Japanese toilets don’t usually have toilet paper.  She was also very nervous about her shoes.  My mother likes to wear sandals, and never wears socks, but she read that Japanese people don’t like to see bare feet, so she was worried that she couldn’t wear sandals in Japan.

My favorite mistake she made was in her hotel room.  In Japan, hotels have a key card that you put in a slot to turn on all the lights and electricity in the room.  We don’t have that in the US so it took her a while to understand how to turn on the lights.  Unfortunately, she thought that was how she should turn off the lights at night, so she took her key out of the slot to go to bed.  That turned off the lights, but it turned off the air conditioner too!  She couldn’t understand why her room was so hot the first night.

My father is a really big man.  He’s probably around 190cm tall, and weighs about 120kg.  Everything in Japan was too small.  He bumped his head at least 10 times on our vacation.  We went to an Izakaya with floor cushions, plus a pit in the floor for your legs.  My father got stuck, and it took us 5 minutes to get him out of the seat!

Neither of them were very good with chopsticks either.  We ate soba once, but it was impossible for my mother to pick up the soba with chopsticks, dip it in the sauce, then eat it.  It always fell into the sauce.  My father was OK, but not very good, and he had trouble with the soba too.  Both of them had to finish eating the soba with their hands.

We had a lot of fun though, and both of them said it was one of the best vacations they have ever had.  We went to Asakusa, Ueno Park, Shibuya Crossing, Tsukiji Market, Harajuku, Yoyogi Park, and all over Shinjuku.  In Kyoto we explored Gion and Higashiyama, and went to Fushimi Inari, the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, and the Arashiyama Monkey Mountain.  We ate a lot of food and drank a lot of sake.  My father’s favorite dinner was Kanto style sukiyaki.  I think I gained 2kg!  It was a great trip!

ご両親が来日されて楽しんだようですね♪
是非、ロビトークなどで
お話ししてみてくださいね(*´▽`*)
