The most important part of drinking is just to have fun.
Drink whatever you want to drink, and enjoy the conversation.  However, traditionally, we drink different kinds of drinks for different situations.  Today I want to tell you the traditional way to drink during a nice dinner.

The time before dinner starts is called cocktail hour.  You should order any kind of cocktail you like, or try something new.  The cocktail can be with ice (on the rocks) or in a martini glass.  Most American restaurants have a special cocktail menu with drinks invented by the bartender.  That menu is a great way to try something new during cocktail hour while you wait for your food.  When the waiter comes to the table for the first time, you order your cocktail by saying “I’ll start out with _______”.

We change our drink during dinner.  Dinner drinks should be softer, easier to drink, and match the food well.  Wine is the most common, but beer is OK too.  White wine is best for light food such as fish or chicken, and red wine for heavy food such as steak, or pasta with meat sauce.  Beer is good for casual food, like pizza or hamburgers.  You can order your dinner drink by saying “With dinner I’ll have ______”.

After dinner, it’s time for desert of course!  With desert, we usually drink coffee, or espresso drinks.  If you want to continue drinking alcohol, the most famous desert drink is champagne.  You can also drink port, which is a strong sweet wine, or a “cordial” or “aperitif”.  A cordial is a sweet alcohol with a fruit or berry flavor.  Chambord is a famous cordial.  An aperitif is bitter, and helps your body digest food.  Campari is a famous aperitif.  You can order your desert drink by saying “With desert, I’ll have ______”.

After desert, if you want to stay and continue having conversation, the traditional drink is brandy.  Sit back, relax, and have a great conversation while you slowly drink your brandy.  When ordering brandy after dinner, we usually speak in a softer way.  You can order brandy by saying “Could I have a _______?”.  If you don’t know the name of the brandy, you can order by its level: “VS” for cheap, “VSOP” for medium, or “XO” for super premium.

PS- If you are celebrating a special occasion, you can drink champagne from start to finish!
