今日は、サラ先生でお届けです♪
英国の料理についてお話ししてくれます!

Dear readers,

Hello again! I hope you're enjoying the start of the Spring season.

Today I'm writing about British Food!

I chose to write on this topic because I hear that British food has a bad reputation in Japan. For some reason, Japanese people tend to think that British food is all kind of disgusting, and sometimes this belief can  influence people's decisions to move to the UK for study or work. But it's not true! (And I'm not just being biased!) In actuality, British food can be really tasty and I'm sure that if you try my recommendations you'll enjoy them.

So, what is 'British food'? The truth is, in the UK most of the food we eat is not traditionally British. In daily life, we eat a lot of Italian food, Mediteranean food, Indian food, and Asian fusion food such as stir fried noodle dishes and curries. It's difficult to think of examples of truly British meals. But here are a few!

First, the classic British Sunday Roast! A Sunday roast is a combination of roasted meat, roasted potatoes, roasted vegetables and yorkshire puddings all cooked with oil inside an oven. You can eat the roasted meat with sauce, such as cranberry, apple, or mint sauce, and with lots of gravy!
We also eat a lot of pies and pastries in the UK! Meat, vegetable, or cheese and onion pies and pasties* are very popular and very delicious. My favourite is fish pie, which is smoked fish and vegetables in a creamy sauce covered with a layer of potato and cheese and baked in the oven (we use the oven a lot in the UK!).
Of course, there's fish and chips too!

But my favourite British foods are definitely desserts. In my opinion, British desserts are some of the best in the world! Some examples are apple crumble* and sticky toffee pudding*. The UK is also one of the best counties in the world at making cakes. Japanese cakes are nice, but they're very different to the kinds of cakes I'm used to from the UK, which are crumby, moist and buttery. The classic Victoria sponge cake* comes from Britain. This is a simple recipe (two English style cakes with jam and cream in the middle like a sandwich), but it's timeless and always a delight. I have never met anyone who doesn't like British desserts!

If you want to try both sweet and savoury together, you can order an afternoon tea at some British cafes! As part of afternoon tea you can try small British cakes, scones, and small finger sandwiches.

I hope I've convinced you that British food is not all bad, and I hope you'll be a little less scared to visit now! But remember that even if you don't like British food, that's okay. You can still visit the UK without worrying, because we eat foreign food most the time anyway!

Have a great week and thank you for reading!
