Last weekend, when I was talking to my mother over the phone, she told me with great excitement about how my college`s football team had won last weekend. I was very happy to hear this, but I was also shocked at myself. I had forgotton all about football since coming to Japan.
In general, sports are popular in Texas. But football is definitly the most important of all the sports. Many people like to watch basketball or baseball, but neither play as large a role in life in Texas.
In high school and college, football is a big part of school life. It`s a part of a school`s identity, there`s a lot of pride attached to having a good football team. In college, it`s not just current students that attend the games and celebrations, former students join in as well! On college gamedays, the area around the college`s stadium is packed with people partying and getting excited for the game. Many people travel all over the country to go to the games.
The games themselves are also really exciting. Even if you don`t like football it`s still fun to go and hang out. At half time there might be performances by the cheerleaders or the marching band. At my college, everytime our team scored we had a gigantic train whistle that when it blew, you could hear it a mile away. Also a touchdown was usually accompanied by fireworks.
Of course, professional football is also really popular in Texas. Dallas is known for its football team, many people have strong opinions on this topic. I have many memories from childhood of Sundays spent eating chips and dip and listening to my mom yell at the tv. In my memories of Thankgiving and Christmas dinners, the sound of a football game plays softly in the background.
( Also as a siden note, while Texas is big on sports there are some that aern`t usually played. Since coming to Japan I have learned that people still play badmitton here, while it has become obsolete back in America. I still don`t quite know what it is.)
