Gone Fishin'!

Hello!

Hello everyone! It’s Fletcher!
I’m here to tell you about the wonderful opportunity I had to go fishing near Ishinomaki a few weekends ago. It was my first time fishing in Japan. To make things easy, one of my students invited me to his home in Furukawa City, where I spent two nights enjoying a rare and authentic taste of local life in Japan.
We woke up at 5:00 am the next day to go to a secluded bay near Onagawa. The drive was long, but the sunrise revealed the beautiful Japanese countryside and rice paddies. It was sunny but very cold, and it was difficult to get the tiny shrimp and worms on the hooks with frozen hands.
Even though I’m still a beginner at fishing, we both had success almost immediately. It wasn’t hard to position the hooks floating close to the bottom where the fish were always biting. Our roles switched and my student became my teacher, showing me a number of great techniques. A few of the regulars were surprised to see me, and even more surprised to see me pulling fish from the water. I couldn’t understand what they were saying, but they seemed very friendly and eager to communicate.
In the end we caught 36 fish, mostly about the size of my palm. After a delicious kaisendon at a local restaurant, we headed back to the house to prepare and cook the fish, a skill I’ve always wanted to learn. All-in-all, it was an amazing experience and I am very grateful for it! I hope I can find more unique experiences like it here in Japan!
