We recently had our annual Apple Harvest Festival here in Ithaca. It lasted three days and attracted over 30,000 people. There was food, wine, music, crafts and other amusements. Of course, apples were the main attraction, and you could find them in the form of apple pie, apple crisps, hot and cold apple cider, apple cider donuts, apple sauce, apple pierogies, and even an apple pie eating contest. (I'm already training for next year's contest.) You could also buy bags and bags of apples to take home with you.

最近ここイサカで年に1度のリンゴ収穫祭がありました。期間は３日間、３万人を超える来場者がありました。食べ物、ワイン、音楽、工芸品や他にもお楽しみがあります。もちろん、リンゴが主役ですが、他のものに姿を変えたリンゴも売られていました。アップル・パイ、アップル・クリスプ、アップルサイダーのホットとアイス、アップルサイダー・ドーナッツ、アップルソース、アップル・ピロシキなどです。また、アップル・パイを食べるコンテストまでありました（来年のコンテストを見すえて目下トレーニング中です）。また、持ち帰り用のリンゴを何袋でも購入することもできます。

Like the weekly farmers market, the Apple Harvest Festival provides an opportunity for people to appreciate the food that local farms produce, and interact with the farmers face-to-face. It's also a chance to learn more about apples and all the amazing varieties we have in this region: Honey Crisp, Gold Rush and Jonagold, to name but a few. I had never heard of many of them until I moved here. Later, I discovered that some of them, like Jonagold, were actually "invented" some years ago at the university here.

毎週開催されるファーマーズマーケットのように、リンゴ収穫祭は地元の農家が作る食べ物を味わうだけでなく、農家の人たちと直接会って交流する機会を人々に提供しています。それはまた、リンゴやこの地域でとれる驚くべき品種の数々について知る機会でもあるのです。
品種をいくつかあげるとすれば、ハニー・クリスプ、ゴールド・ラッシュやジョナゴールドなどがあります。ここへ引っ越して来るまで、聞いたことがないものがたくさんあります。後になって、ジョナゴールドみたいに、これらいくつかの品種は数年前、ここの大学で「発明」されたのだ、ということを知りました。

Sadly, the festival was also a time to say goodbye to warmer weather. However, for those that enjoy ice fishing, the season is just around the corner!

残念なことに、このお祭りの時期がきたということは、暖かい天気に別れを告げる時期がきた、ということでもあります。でも、（氷の）穴釣りを楽しむ人たちにとっては、その季節がすぐそこまで来ている、と言うことができます！

One of the popular bumper stickers around here says, "Ithaca: 10 square miles surrounded by reality." We really are in a small, isolated town and the locals revel in the quirkiness. Because of the university, a lot of interesting people have made their home here over the years, including the writers Vladimir Nabokov, Alex Haley and E.B. White.

この辺りで人気のバンパー・ステッカーのひとつに、「イサカ：現実に囲まれた10平方マイル」と言うのがあります。確かに、イサカは小さな孤立した町で、地元民たちはその浮世離れした雰囲気を満喫しています。大学※１があるお陰で、長年にわたり、ウラジミール・ナボコフ、アレックス・ヘイリーやE.B.ホワイトといった作家を含む、多くの興味深い人々がここに住居を構えました。

The other popular slogan is "Ithaca is gorges※２." In the summertime, you can't walk outside without seeing at least one person wearing one of these T-shirts. Like most slogans based on a pun, it loses a little bit of its charm over time, but nobody can really dispute that the natural beauty in Ithaca is indeed gorgeous.

もうひとつの人気スローガンは、「イサカと言えば渓谷（ゴージャス）」です。夏の間、外を歩けば、こういったTシャツを着ている人を最低ひとりは目にします。ダジャレが元になっている多くのスローガンがそうであるように、このことばの魅力も時と共に少し色あせてきますが、イサカの自然が実にゴージャスだと言う事に異論を唱えることは誰にもできないでしょう。

Last weekend a friend came to visit from New York City, so I took him around to see some of the gorges. I think he enjoyed himself. The whole time he was here, he commented on how nice it was to get away from the city and breathe fresh air. We spent all of Saturday afternoon lying out by a local swimming hole and watching the college kids dive off the rocks.

先週末、友人がニューヨークからやって来たので渓谷をいくつか見に行きました。楽しんでくれたみたいです。彼はここにいる間ずっと、都会を逃れて新鮮な空気を吸うのはなんて気持ちがいいんだろう、と言っていました。土曜日の午後はずっと、地元の水泳のできる場所の近くに寝転んで、学生たちが岩から飛び込むのを眺めて過ごしました。

In the town I live in, there are at least five or six CSAs that people can join. Some, like mine, even have a waiting list. (We have 260 members.) In some places, there are CSAs for meat, seafood, specific crops like berries, etc. One common feature is that every week, the farm also share recipes so people unfamiliar with certain crops will have an idea how to prepare them. At my farm, there is also an herb garden and a flower garden where members are welcome to come anytime to take what they want. This alone has made it worth it, as we always have access to fresh basil, mint, oregano, marjoram, thyme, dill, chives and rosemary.

Another feature of my CSA is that members are requested to come work at least one three-hour shift every year. (Instead of doing so, they can pay a little bit extra.) The farm is very eager to get the community educated about how farms work. They also have periodic "you-pick" crops like strawberries and peas. With these crops, instead of receiving them with the rest of your pick-up, you are expected to harvest them yourself if you want them. This tends to be especially popular with kids.

 

僕が住んでいる町には、少なくとも5つか6つの参加可能なCSAがあります。僕が参加したのと同じように、いくつかは入会待ちになっているものさえあります（260名のメンバーがいます）。場所によっては肉、シーフード、木の実のような特別な農作物のためのCSAもあります。どのCSAにも共通しているのは、農作物に詳しくない人たちがどうやって料理したらよいかアイデアが浮かぶように、農場が毎週レシピを教えてくれる、ということです。僕の農場ではハーブ庭園と花の庭園があり、そこではメンバーたちは好きな時間に来て好きなものを取っていいことになっています。これだけでも価値があります。新鮮なバジルやミント、オレガノ、マジョラム、タイム、ディルやニラにローズマリーをいつでも入手できるのです。
僕が参加したCSAのもう１つの特徴はメンバーたちが毎年最低１回3時間シフトで働くように依頼される、ということです（そうする代わりに、少し多めに支払うことも可能です）。農場は地域社会にもっと農場の仕事について知って欲しい、と切望しているからです。また定期的に「あなたが摘む」イチゴや豆と言った農作物もあります。こうした農作物は、その他自分たちが選んだものと一緒に受け取る代わりに、望めば自ら収穫してもいいのです。これは特に子供たちに人気があります。

Thanks to the growing demand for fresh, local, organic produce, CSAs are sprouting up all over the country. A CSA (Community-Supported Agriculture) is a business model for small farms. The farm sells "shares" to members, who pay the farm in the spring. Then, for a predetermined length of time, the members receive a weekly share of the harvest.
It's great for farmers, who can worry less about money and marketing. And it's great for consumers, who get access to fresh produce and exposure to different fruit and vegetables that they might not otherwise buy. Furthermore, they get to learn more about where their food comes from.

The CSA I joined has strawberries, peaches, garlic, tomatoes, apples, potatoes, and tons of other stuff. They also have an option where instead of paying for a share, a certain few members can work it off instead. Luckily, I signed up early, so I've been able to do this. A couple of days a week, for a few hours in the morning, I show up at the farm and am put to work pruning tomatoes, laying down mulch, harvesting crops, washing greens, pulling weeds, setting up irrigation hoses, preparing fertilizer, chasing away snakes, or whatever else needs to be done that day. It's a fantastic way to start the day, and the knowledge I'm gaining I hope to use in my own garden one day.

 

新鮮な地元で作られている有機農産物の需要が益々高くなっているので、CSA は国中あちこちで急成長しています。
CSAは、Community-Supported Agriculture(地域がサポートする農業)という意味で、小さな農場のビジネスモデルです。農場はメンバーたちに「割り当て」を売り、彼らはその代金を春に支払います。それで予め決められた期間、メンバーたちは毎週収穫の割り当てを受け取ります。お金とマーケティングの心配が減りますから、農家にとっては素晴らしいことです。消費者にとっても同様です。新鮮な商品が入手でき、さもなければ買わなかったかも知れない多種多様な果物や野菜を目にすることができるわけですから。更に自分の食べ物がどこから来ているのかをより詳しく知ることにもなります。
僕が入会したCSAにはイチゴ、桃、ニンニク、トマト、リンゴ、じゃがいも、その他実にいろいろなものがあります。彼らには割り当てにお金を払う代わりに、働くことで支払ったこととする、という選択肢も少数ながらあります。運良く僕は早めに入会したので、これが可能になったのです。1週間に数日、朝の2,3時間、僕は農場へ行き、トマトを切り取ったり、敷き藁を降ろしたり、穀物を収穫したり、青野菜を洗ったり、雑草をむしったり、灌漑用のホースの設置や肥料の準備、蛇を追い払ったり、その他その日にやらなければならない作業をするのです。一日を始めるには最高の方法で、僕が得ている知識はある日きっと自分の庭園で活用できると思っています。

Well, March 4 was National Grammar Day. Quite frankly, I had never heard of it until that morning. I woke up, turned on my computer while I was eating breakfast, and saw that people were talking about it on Twitter.

After a little poking around on the Web, I found out that it was started two years ago by a writer named Martha Brockenbrough, founder of the Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar. The slogan for the day was "March forth on March fourth!"

As is the same in probably every language, there are people who use less than perfect grammar and spelling, and there are others who love to point out their mistakes. Personally, I'm a little surprised that there are enough people in the latter group to make National Grammar Day a trending topic on Twitter. Of course, this may be because a lot of the tweets were from people making jokes about it. Like:

"National Grammar Day are probably one of my favorite day!"

Or this observation from someone noting the irony of celebrating correct grammar usage on Twitter (a medium known for short, sloppy writing):

"Celebrating National Grammar Day on Twitter is like trying to hold an AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) meeting in the middle of Mardi Gras."

So there you have it. Until next year, study hard and get yourself ready. The next National Grammar Day is only 10 months away!

3月４日は「ナショナル・グラマー・デー」でした。実のところ、その日の朝までそんな名前は聞いたことがありませんでした。朝起きて、朝食を食べながらコンピューターを立ち上げ、ツイッターで皆がそれについて話し合っているのを見た、というわけです。

ネットで少し調べてみたところ、この日は２年前、「正しい文法の使用を促進する会」を創立した、マーサ・ブロッケンブラーというライターによって始められたことがわかりました。この日のスローガンは「３月４日に前進を！（March forth on March fourth!※1）」

間違った文法やつづりを使う人がいれば、他の人のそういう間違いを指摘する人がいる、というのはどの言語においても同じ話。「ナショナル・グラマー・デー」をツイッターで話題にするには十分なほどの数の、後者に属する人たちがいる、ということに個人的には少し驚いています。もちろん、これはたくさんのツイート（つぶやき）が、この日に対するジョークであることと関係しているかもしれませんが。例えばこんなツイート。

「ナショナル・グラマー・デーは、私の好きな日のひとつです！ (National Grammar Day are probably one of my favorite day!※2)」

他にも、短くて雑な文章を使うことで知られている媒体のツイッターで「正しい文法の使用」を祝うことを皮肉った、こんな意見もありました。

「ナショナル・グラマー・デーをツイッターで祝うのは、マルディグラ※3の真っ最中にAA（アルコール中毒者更生会）の会合を開くようなものだ」

まあ、そういうわけです。来年まで、一生懸命勉強して準備を怠りなく。
10ヶ月もすれば、ナショナル・グラマー・デーはやってくるので。

Actually, the way Salinger lived the last 56 years of his life is something of itself. Upon hearing that he died, lots of people were probably shocked because they didn't even know he had still been alive. He hated fame and he cherished his privacy. So, in 1953 he moved from NYC to a house in rural New Hampshire, and soon stopped publishing altogether. The people in the area protected him, and if anyone came looking for his house, they would send them on a wild goose chase. In this day and age, I find it pretty remarkable that he could live that way. His need for privacy kind of reminds me of the writer Jack London, who purportedly had the following sign on his door: "1. Please do not enter without knocking. 2. Please do not knock."

On a related note, American historian Howard Zinn also passed away on the very same day. He was a professor, an activist, and a writer, known for championing the voices of the working people. His book "The People's History of the United States," which he wrote to counterbalance the narrative of American history that's taught in schools, has sold more than 2 million copies. Personally, I always liked him. He really lived his life with meaning. I had bought that book nine years ago while living in Japan, and in somewhat of a coincidence, just finished reading it about a week before he died. As someone on the Internet said, January 27 was "a bad day for progressive underdogs."

実際のところ、サリンジャーのここ56年間の生活ぶり自体、特筆すべきものです。彼の訃報を聞いた時、おそらく多くの人が驚いたのではないかと思います。彼がまだ生きていた、ということすら知らなかった、という理由で。彼は名声を嫌い、プライバシーを大切にしました。そのため彼は1953年にニューヨークから田舎のニューハンプシャーにある家に移り、その後間もなく完全に作品を出版するのをやめました。その地域の人々も彼を守り、誰かが彼の家を探しにきたらわざと迷わせるようなことをしたものです。このような時代に彼がそんな生活を送ることができた、というのは注目に値すると思います。彼のプライバシーの追求は、なぜか、ジャック・ロンドンという作家を思い出させます。ジャック・ロンドンの玄関のドアには次のような張り紙がされていたといいます：１.ノックをせずに部屋に入らないで下さい。２.ノックをしないで下さい。

この話に関連してですが、アメリカ人の歴史学者ハワード・ジンが、（サリンジャーと）まさに同じ日に死去しました。彼は、大学教授であり、社会活動家であり、作家でもあり、また、労働者たちの声の擁護者としても知られていました。学校のアメリカの歴史では教わらないことを書いた、彼の著書「民衆のアメリカ史」は200万部以上も売れました。個人的に僕は彼のことがずっと好きでした。彼は本当に人生に目的を持って生きていました。彼の本は日本在住中の９年前に買っていて、ちょっとした偶然ですが、彼が亡くなる、ちょうど１週間前に読み終えていました。インターネットである人が言っていたように、１月27日は「進歩的な負け犬にとってはひどい一日」となりました。

In fact, I kind of wondered why it had taken me so long to find out about Salinger. I had always heard mention of his name, and "The Catcher in the Rye," but judging by its title, I just assumed it was a boring book about farming. It's probably just as well, though, since as a high school student, I probably wouldn't have fully understood or appreciated it, and may well have even hated it.

Later on in college, I learned that "The Catcher in the Rye" was practically a lightning rod for controversy. Since its publication in 1951, it had been banned from countless schools and libraries, and a high school teacher had even been fired for assigning it. The man who shot John Lennon in 1980 cited the book as his inspiration and reportedly gave it to the police as an explanation for his actions. And the man who shot Ronald Reagan in 1981 was said to have been obsessed with the book. A copy was found in his hotel room. Somehow, for me this all just added to its aura.

Over the last 15 years, my close friends and I have spread out all over the country. News like Salinger's passing gives us an excuse to e-mail each other. The last few days, we've been talking about how much his books meant to us back when we read him, although who knows if we would like him as much now. And the overwhelming sentiment among us was, "Wouldn't it be cool if we got to read his unpublished work now?" Salinger came to consider publishing an invasion of his privacy, and he reportedly stowed away the books he wrote in a safe in his house. Who knows if they're still there, or if he destroyed them before he died.

実のところ、サリンジャーのことを知るのになぜそんなにも時間がかかってしまったのか、自分でも不思議に思っていました。彼の名前も「ライ麦畑でつかまえて」も、絶えず耳にしていたのですが、題名から、つまらない農業についての本だろうなどと思っていたのです。でも、かえってそれがよかったのかもしれません。高校生の頃読んでいたら、おそらく内容やその良さを十分に理解できなかったでしょうし、嫌いになることすらあったかもしれません。

その後大学に進学して、「ライ麦畑でつかまえて」が事実上、論争の的になっていることを知りました。1951年に出版されて以来、この作品は数え切れないほどの学校や図書館で禁書となり、またある高校教師はこの本を課題に出したことで職を失ったほどでした。1980年にジョン・レノンを射殺した男は、この作品を引き合いに出して、作品からインスピレーションを受けたと言い、暗殺の理由として本を警察に渡したと報じられています。さらに1981年にロナルド・レーガンを狙撃した男もこの本に夢中だったと言われています。男が泊まっていたホテルの部屋でこの本が見つかったのです。ともかく、こういった話すべてが、僕にとっては、この本のオーラを高めるものとなったわけです。

この15年間で、親しい友人も僕もアメリカのあちらこちらに散らばってしまいました。そんな中、サリンジャーの訃報は互いにメールをする口実を与えてくれました。ここ何日か、彼の作品が、それを読んだ当時どれだけ自分たちにとって重要な意味を持っていたかを語り合ったのです。ただ、今、彼の作品を読んでも、当時と同じように思うかどうかは何とも言えないのですが。感想として圧倒的に多かったのは「彼の未発表の作品を読めたらどんなにいいだろう」というものでした。サリンジャーは出版をプライバシーの侵害行為と見なすようになり、書いた作品を自宅の金庫にしまい込んでいたと言われています。原稿が未だに金庫にあるのか、それとも自分が死ぬ前に破棄したのか、それは誰にもわからないのですが。

Well, it's not the cheeriest way to start a blog, but I'd like to write a little bit about J.D. Salinger, who passed away in January at the age of 91. His novel "Catcher in the Rye," has had a huge impact on American culture. Through the voice of the young anti-hero protagonist, Holden Caulfield, Salinger articulated the feelings of alienation and hatred of all things phony. Many of us were forced to read this book in high school or college, and, depending on what age we read it at, we either loved it or hated it.

Personally, I loved it. I read it during my third year of college, when I had already become distrustful of authority figures and suspicious of society in general. At that age, the only things I trusted were my friends, music, and a handful of good books, so Holden Caulfield was basically preaching to the cynical choir*. Actually, in one of my writing classes, we were assigned to read "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" from the short story collection "Nine Stories." That was my first introduction to Salinger, and I really dug the combination of irony and contemptuousness in his voice. From there, I searched out a copy of "The Catcher in the Rye" and "Franny and Zooey." The world of elite, East Coast, upper-class kids was foreign to me, but the misanthropy and angst was something that was pretty easy to identify with.

ブログを始めるにあたってはあまり明るい出だしとは言えませんが、1月に91歳で亡くなったJ.D.Salingerについて少し書いてみたいと思います。彼の小説「ライ麦畑でつかまえて」はアメリカ文化に非常に大きな影響を与えました。サリンジャーは、ホールデン・コールフィールドというアンチヒーローの主人公を通して、疎外感やすべての「いんちき」に対する嫌悪感を歯切れよく表現しました。この本はほとんどの人が高校か大学で読まされるのですが、読んだ時の年齢により、好きになるか嫌いになるかのどちらかだ、ということが言えると思います。

個人的には僕はこの作品が大好きでした。この本を読んだのは、すでに権威ある者に対する不信感が芽生え、社会全般への不信を募らせるようになっていた大学３年生の時です。当時、唯一信用できるものと言えば、友達、音楽そして数冊の本だけ。そのように、すでにシニカルだった僕の目には、ホールデン・コールフィールドはことさら新しい、とは映らなかった、というわけです。実は、あるライティングクラスで、短編集「ナイン・ストーリーズ」の中の「バナナ魚にはもってこいの日」が読書課題になりました。この作品で初めてサリンジャーを知ったわけですが、皮肉と軽蔑が入り混じった語り口がすごく気に入りました。これをきっかけに「ライ麦畑でつかまえて」と「フラニーとゾーイー」を読みました。エリート、東海岸、上流階級の子供たち。自分にとって無縁の世界であるにもかかわらず、人間嫌いや漠然とした不安に自分を重ねるのは簡単なことでした。
